Beaver Island is a step back to a slower and gentler time

On the first afternoon of our arrival on Beaver Island, I was doing the perfunctory staple run at McDonough's Market, when I was paid a high compliment.

It came from, I believe, the tall, dark and handsome Jim McDonough. But I might have confused him with his brothers, Bill or Tim, because they are all close in age and equally good looking, thanks to the solid Irish stock of Edna "Skip" and Bud McDonough.

Skip, who was widowed early, raised seven children here while running the only grocery store on the island, the combination of which fostered her well-known trademark: "Oh, for the love of "
