Vacation Suggestions!

Post by Rob »

I will be traveling to Beaver Island this summer. I am searching for accomodations for 2. I heard the West side is a bit less buggy and has some nice sunsets.. are there rentals on that side or hotels?

I'm just looking for general suggestions on where to go, what to see, etc. Also, is it needed to bring a vehicle over to the island?

This site is great.. i'm looking forward to visiting the island, it looks like a WONDERFUL place!!!

Hi Rob,

Thanks very much for the kind comments!

As far as accommodations, we have the Beaver Island Hotels & Motels listed here:
http://www.beaverbeacon.com/Directory/Accommodations/

The Emerald Isle Hotel is the newest hotel on the Island with nice new Rooms and Suites and is located one block over and one block up the hill from the Ferry dock and the public beach. They also rent bicycles in the summer. Their web site is at http://www.emeraldislehotel.com

The Harbor View is located on the hill overlooking the Ferry Dock and has the Island's only swimming pool.

The Laurain Lodge is the second newest lodging, and is tucked in the woods with a central landscaped courtyard a short walk from town out the Donegal Bay Road and down the Beaver Lodge drive. They also have boats on the Inland lakes for thier guests. Their web site is http://www.laurainlodge.com

The Beaver Island Lodge is located right on the beach for great sunsets and also features Nina's Restaurant attached.

Finally, the Erin Motel is located on the Harbor on Main Street.

All the hotels are in or near town, but we also have a number of rental cottages listed at http://www.beaverbeacon.com/Directory/Classified_Ads/
The photo ads are in the main category, but also click on "Real Estate For Rent" for more.

I've always liked the west site better myself becuase I prefer sunsets to sunrises and I like the larger trees and bluff, but then again, there are lots of nice spots on the East Side too. For example, from some of the rental cottages you can watch boats and the Ferry come and go from the Harbor which is nice, and there are some nice sandy beaches on the east side too.

As far as bringing a vehicle, if it's your first time to the Island and you'll be coming for a short visit and staying in town, you could probably have plenty of fun around St. James; all but one of the restaurants are within walking distance, and you could explore the shops in town, walk the docks, or rent a bike and ride out to Font Lake or hike up Mt. Pisgah and see a sunset at Donegal Bay. Or you could take a kayak trip with Inland Seas (www.inlandseaskayaking.com) or charter a boat to visit the outer Islands, my favorites being Garden for the nice trails or High for the spectacular dunes and deep water harbor.

But if you'll be coming to Beaver Island for a longer stay, I would probably bring a vehicle so you can get further out of town, see the 7 inland lakes, walk on some of the more remote west side beaches, visit the south end Lighthouse, and walk down Kuebler Trail under the bluff past the back side of Barney's Lake and then on the top side of the bluff to Protar's Tomb. Although you can also rent a Geo Tracker from Beaver Island Marina (231) 448-2300 or vehicles from Gordon's Auto Clinic (231) 448-2438 if you wanted to plan one or two days of your trip for out-of-town excursions for example.

P.S. I should also say that in addition to the Beaver Island rental cottages we have listed at http://www.beaverbeacon.com/Directory/Classified_Ads/ , Beaver Island Realty's Cottage Rental program is online at http://www.beaverislandrealty.com/cotta ... l-program/ and another great place to check - at this late date though, you'll have to give them a call (many people start reserving Beaver Island rental cottages for late June, July, and August right after the 1st of the year)
