64yr old Petroleum Pipeline under Mackinac Straits

Post by Walleyeguy »

There are two 20 inch, 63yr old oil & natural gas pipelines that run 4.5 miles on the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac , which carry 2.3 million gallons of oil & liquid Nat Gas a day. Line 5, as itâ??s known, is owned by Enbridge, which also owned a similar pipeline which was responsible for the July 2010 spill of 1.1 million gallons of heavy crude into the Kalamazoo river near Marshall MI; the largest inland US oil spill in US history. That spill cost over $1.1 billion & 5yrs later, is still being cleaned up. Between 1999 & 2010 Enbridge had over 800 oil spills which totaled 6.8MM gallons. Pipeline 5â??s location between Huron & Lake Michigan has been described as potentially the worst place possible for a oil spill in the Great Lakes by Hydrologist Dave Schwab, Phd with University of Michigan. The best case scenario if Enbridge was able to immediately shut down line 5 if a spill occurred, to only one of the two pipelines, is the release of over 1.5mm gallons of oil. If a spill occurs it would significantly impact the Beaver Archipelago.

Enbridge is again asking the stateâ??s environmental regulators to green-light a new plan to continue operating dangerous Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac.
We only have until June 29 to stop a permit that would allow Enbridge to squeeze more life out of its cracked, dented and deformed pair of 64-year-old pipelines in the Straits. Join us today in submitting public comment through our petition demanding that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) reject Enbridgeâ??s permit request for Line 5 in the Straits.
SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENT
Enbridge is asking for a state permit to upgrade Line 5 without any public hearing that would examine the condition of these dangerous pipelines that carry 23 million gallons of oil a day across the bottom of the Mackinac Straits, where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet.

Line 5 has reached the end of its lifespan - this pipe has pumped enough oil
Please take action now to urge that the MDEQ reject Enbridgeâ??s request to continue the piecemeal patch up of the 64-year-old â??Line 5â?￾ pipelines. They threaten the drinking water source for more than 40 million people, the economic engine for the Great Lakes region, and a way of life for millions of North Americans.
Eight months ago more than 6,000 of us told the state to reject this nearly identical permit request from Enbridge, and so the state backed off, and Enbridge withdrew its permit application. At the time we said Enbridgeâ??s request to expand its anchoring support system along the Straits was part of a larger effort to pump more dirty oil through Line 5 and its entire Great Lakes system.
Since then it was revealed that Line 5 anchors in the Straits - missing for decades - have heightened the risk of pipeline metal fatigue and failure. Much more needs to be learned about Line 5, yet Enbridge wants the state to approve its permit application without a single public hearing or a comprehensive examination of the condition of these decaying pipelines.
