May 26-28, 2017
The 4th annual Beaver Island Birding Festival, Warblers on the Water, will be held on May 26-28, 2017, on Beaver Island, in northern Lake Michigan. The island is a spring migratory song and shore bird mecca with over 200 species of birds recorded from the island. Registration is limited and birders are urged to register early through the Beaver Island Birding Trail website at http://www.beaverislandbirdingtrail.org.

Transportation to the island is via ferry or air taxi. Lodging is available on the island, and transportation for the various field trips will be provided to registered participants. More information about transportation and lodging is available on the website.

Expert speakers, researchers, and field guides will lead workshops and field trips to some of the islandâ??s 30+ birding sites. Whether you are a novice or expert birder there will be something for you during this Memorial Weekend event.

Featured speakers include Jerry Weinrich, retired wildlife biologist with the Michigan DNR, who will present, â??Michigan Eagles and Ospreys, A Birdâ??s Eye View,â?￾ Brian Allen, author, researcher, and conservationist, who will present â??Birding Peru, Penguins to Piping Guans,â?￾ and Darrell Lawson, President of the Petoskey Regional Audubon Society, who will offer â??Birding 101,â?￾ a popular program with advice on all aspects of birding. Field trips include a demonstration of mist netting by Dr. Nancy Seefelt, a biology professor at Central Michigan University, and two evening trips to spot owls and other nocturnal animals.

I had an islander tell me that they did not register for the BIBT event because they wanted to leave spaces for off-island birders. Please don't hesitate to sign up. This weekend is for all of us to get outside and learn about our feathered friends. Visitors love to learn from islanders about island life. Currently, Field Trips 4 and 5 are filled but we have added additional field trips this year and don't forget about the great line-up of speakers who will be visiting.

Thank you to the BIBT sponsors:  Beaver Island Gulf Coarse, Beaver Island Association, Beaver Island Boat Company, Beaver Beacon, Beaver Island Wildlife Club, Beaver Island Studio and Gallery, BirdGoober, Little Traverse Conservancy, Island Airways, Dalwhinnie, McDonough's Market, Preservation Association of Beaver Island, Paradise Bay Coffee Shop, and Holy Cross Church. :D
