A remote, safe and picturesque location: the Island is located 32 miles northwest of Charlevoix, MI, in Lake Michiganâ??a 20 min. flight or 2 hr. ferry ride.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

The employee who holds this position is the â??lead caretakerâ?￾ of our building and facilitiesâ??one who feels as responsible for the schoolâ??s well-being as he/she does for oneâ??s own personal residence. The custodianâ??s role in the functioning of the school is importantâ??not only because of the buildingâ??s maintenance, cleaning and care, but also for work with other adults and young students. A spirit of caring and concern (shown by friendliness and helpfulness) fits into the goals of our school.

The routine cleaning responsibilities during the school year are shared with a part time assistant, and include: cleaning our classrooms, hallways, restrooms, gym, locker rooms, and officesâ??as well as ensuring safe and clean entryways, salting the driveways when needed, and ensuring adequate internal and external lighting. Additional tasks include setting up tables and chairs for events, resetting the septic when needed and seeing that it is cleaned and serviced, as well as making minor repairs at the school and regular checks on heating and roof drains. During the summer, many of the work responsibilities are similar, but include more thorough annual cleaning and work on maintenance projects.

The custodian/maintenance employee works under the supervision of the Superintendent-Principal of the school (or his designee). The position is full time, at 40 hours a week, and paid by the hour according to the Boardâ??s staff salary schedule. It may be adjusted by the Supt-Prin. in light of favorable performance reviews, in concert with Board policy. The insurance benefits and leave/vacation days include:
â?¢ Health, dental, and vision insurance, after a 90 day waiting period following the 1st day of employment
â?¢ Ten vacation days over the 12 month year
â?¢ Four personal days
â?¢ Ten holidays off, when they occur within the school work week

The current salary range is $16 to $18 an hourâ??depending on experience. An annual performance award at the end of each school year is a possibility, depending on receipt of an effective or highly-effective evaluation.
