Yes, I have memories of it. I lived on the island in summer of 1971 as a high school-aged teen and worked as a dishwasher at the Castaways restaurant across from the Shamrock (it's now Island Sports). We had no running water at our cabin. Port St. James Association offered to allow non-members the use of the pool..., and the showers, for a 25 cent charge. I took advantage of that for the use of the showers..., and well, there might have been a few teenaged girls hanging around out there, too.
No, I don't remember the exact year in the 70's that it was filled in. From what I understand the operating of it had become a liability and insurance issue for PSJA and was therefore voted to be closed.
When I started helping Lillian Gregg with Island Tours in 1974/75, we always pointed out the "fish-shaped, sandfilled" swiming pool as we passed on the way to Mt. Pisgah.
