Whoever carved their initials into the Big Birch Tree by Fox Lake did major damage to the tree. That tree is over 100 yrs old and is a prized possession for islanders. Open bark on a tree attracts bugs which will eat away at the tree.
Alex, you are very right, what kind of fool would deface that tree! It is said that it is the second largest birch tree in Michigan and would be largest if it were not "twinned". Sad.
