Wildlife Club needs help clearing land

Post by jacquel »

The Beaver Island Wildlife Club, in conjunction with the Ruffed Grouse Society and MDNR will begin a Habitat Improvement project ("Priority Young Forests Project") on 7 acres of State land adjacent to the Johnny Martin trail(JMT) off East Side Drive this week. Volunteers will meet on Wednesdays and Saturdays @ 10 am with chain saws, weather permitting( we won't meet if temp is below 15 degrees or there are high winds). BIWC will provide a 40/1 fuel mix and bar oil for volunteers

Volunteers should bring all the safety gear and equipment they normally use when using a chain saw. The most important part of this project is to send each volunteer home safely every day. Use extra caution, take frequent breaks and ask for help when needed. For more on chainsaw safety, refer to The Lansing State Journal article http://ow.ly/HAFC.

Access to the project is thru the Johnny Martin gravel pit off East Side Drive (across from the Grassmick home). Follow the two track beyond the gravel pit for parking of vehicles or more preferably, ride a quad or snowmobile directly to the work site( the work site is ~250 yards beyond the car/truck parking area).

Get instructions on the cutting from Phil Wyckoff or Gary Morgan at the site. Thanks for your support.!!

Jacque LaFreniere will provide a pot of soup for the workers at noon on Wednesday Jan. 21. Anyone wishing to help with food on other work days, please contact Jacque
