Be part of WVBI... the island's new radio station!

Post by WVBI »

Come to WVBI's summer classes. Learn what you need to know to be involved in the island's first radio station! Whether you just want to learn how to collect oral histories, or want to learn how to do audio production or to be a DJ at WVBI (or all or any combination of that), we have something for you. We also have related films planned for Monday and Tuesday evening that you can attend even if you can't make it to class. Read on for details.

Learn how to preserve your family's history. On Monday, August 4, WVBI is offering a rare learning opportunity: how to effectively collect oral historiesâ??the unwritten personal stories of the people around youâ??and preserve them for future generations. Join us at the Beaver Island Community School for this introductory class taught by Dr. Charles Ganzert, a Northern Michigan University (NMU) professor who has taught and written extensively on the art of oral histories and Dan Truckey, director of the Beumier Heritage Center at NMU who has curated Beaver Island history exhibits.

This class will run from 10 am to 4 pm with a break for lunch. Get further details and reserve your place by sending an e-mail to classes@wvbi.net

See oral histories used in film: Yum, Yum Yum and Home on the Island. Monday evening (the 4th), at 7 pm, everyone's invited to the Community Center to see two short films that show how oral histories can be woven together into a compelling story. First, "Yum, Yum, Yum," directed by Les Blank, an award-winning independent filmmaker, offers a window into Louisiana Cajun culture, told by famous musicians who talk about their lives while they cook their distinctive, delicious foods.

In the second film, "Home on the Island," a short film produced by Moondance Productions, you'll learn the story of the Irish emigration from Ã￾rainn Mhór Donegal to Beaver Island through the voices of their descendants.

Both films will be shown at the Community Center on the main stage. Showtime is 7 p.m. with a short discussion break between the films.

Learn how to become part of the Islandâ??s new low-power FM radio station, WVBI. On Tuesday, August 5, you'll have the chance to learn modern radio production. We'll start with the basics, but by the end of the day you'll be a wiz with the latest and greatest. You'll learn how to create live broadcasts, edit pre-recorded audio into great shows that keep your audience listening, do something called "voice tracking and a lot more. We'll also cover the rules of the road from the FCC for running our station. It'll be a jammed packed day, but you will learn a lot.

The class will run from 10 am to 4 pm with a break for lunch. We will meet at the Beaver Island Community School.

See radio come to life in A Prairie Home Companion (the movie) at the Community Center. Tuesday evening (the 5th), at 7 pm, we'll have some fun at the Community Center watching "A Prairie Home Companion," a comedy that takes you backstage in one of America's most-celebrated radio shows.

Apply what you've learned. On August 6, we'll meet at BICS, and teach you how to apply what you've learned through hands-on training in the BICS computer lab. Edit that oral history you've recorded. Put together your own top ten show. Create a radio drama. Record the fits Beaver Island Companion. The choice is yours. We'll be there to help. During the day, we'll visit WVBI studio, located in the Community Center so you'll have the opportunity to see it in action with the station on the air.

Wednesday's class will run from 10 am to 4 pm with a break for lunch. We will start at the Beaver Island Community School, but we will venture over to the Community Center to have a look at the WVBI studio.

Reserve your place today by sending an e-mail to classes@wvbi.net. After you complete your training, we'll help you develop and record your own radio show. You can be one of the very first local DJs on WVBI!

You can go to one or both classes on Monday and Tuesday (August 4 and 5)

But, our Wednesday, August 6 class requires you to attend Tuesday as well, so that you understand what we're teaching.
