Be a DJ on WVBI! Classes run from August 4 to 6

Post by WVBI »

Learn how to preserve your family's history.

On Monday, August 4, WVBI is offering a rare learning opportunity: how to effectively collect oral historiesâ??the unwritten personal stories of the people around youâ??and preserve them for future generations. Join us at the Beaver Island Community School for this introductory class taught by Dr. Charles Ganzert, a Northern Michigan University (NMU) professor who has taught and written extensively on the art of oral histories and Dan Truckey, director of the Beumier Heritage Center at NMU who has curated Beaver Island history exhibits.

This class will run from 10 am to 4 pm with a break for lunch. Get further details and reserve your place by sending an e-mail to classes@wvbi.net

That same night, at 7 pm, everyone's invited to the Community Center to see two short films that show how oral histories can be woven together into a compelling story. First, "Yum, Yum, Yum," directed by Les Blank, an award-winning independent filmmaker, offers a window into Louisiana Cajun culture, told by famous musicians who talk about their lives while they cook their distinctive, delicious foods. To help you get in the Cajun spirit, we'll have some Michigan seafood jambalaya, hot and ready on the Community Center stove.

In the second film, "Home on the Island," a short film produced by Moondance Productions, you'll learn the story of the Irish emigration from Ã￾rainn Mhór Donegal to Beaver Island through the voices of their descendants.

Learn how to become part of the Islandâ??s new low-power FM radio station, WVBI

On Tuesday and Wednesday, August 5 and 6, you'll have the chance to learn modern radio production.

First, there's our broadcast training class on August 5 at the Beaver Island Community School, where we'll introduce you to the basics. You'll learn how to create live broadcasts, edit pre-recorded audio into great shows that keep your audience listening, and lots more. That night, at 7 pm, we'll have some fun at the Community Center watching "A Prairie Home Companion," a comedy that takes you backstage in one of America's most-celebrated radio shows.

Then, on August 6, we'll meet at the BICS, and teach you how to apply what you've learned through hands-on training at the BICS computer lab and the WVBI studio, located in the Community Center.

Both of these classes will run from 10 am to 4 pm with a break for lunch. Space is limited, so reserve your place early by sending an e-mail to classes@wvbi.net

After you complete your training, we'll help you develop and record your own radio show. You can be one of the very first local DJs on WVBI!

WVBI is a service of the Preservation Association of Beaver Island (PABI), the founder and operator of the Beaver Island Community Center, Your free will donations for these classes and films will go to PABI for further developing WVBI.
