BIA Invasive Species Summit Get a Grip on Invasives

Post by BeaverIslandAssociation »

A final reminder, The BIA Invasive Species Summit Get a Grip on Invasives is this Thursday, June 14. The Summit begins at 2:00PM at the Beaver Island Community Center.
The Summit, will present the dangers of invasive species, explain how to control them and identify their negative impact on outdoor activities, real estate values, the islandâ??s economy and our environment. You will be introduced to the extensive invasive surveying project being led by the Nature Conservancy this summer and have the opportunity to ask question of experts.
We are excited about the quality of experts we have making presentations. One of those presenting is Matthew Bertrand, Invasive Species Specialist for the Grand Traverse Conservation District.
Matthew Bertrand joined the Grand Traverse Conservation District in October 2010. Previously, he worked on crews in S.E. Michigan managing invasive species in some of Michiganâ??s most sensitive habitats. As a two-term AmeriCorps member in Tucson, AZ, he led regular service projects with youth and adults building native plant landscapes, raingardens, food gardens, and greywater systems. During his service, he helped found a community cooperative through which homeowners worked together to enhance their home landscapes for the environment. In 2006, Matthew received his BA in Literature, with minors in history and computer science, from Arizona State University. He became active in environmental and resource management issues based on his experiences living and traveling in South America, from the Galápagos to Tierra del Fuego. Matthew enjoys gardening, tending chickens, and playing guitar.
This is a free event!
Invasive plants are spreading on almost all private and public lands on our island archipelago. You do not need to register, just show up and be part of the solution!
We hope to see you there!
